Our project is pretty simple. We love movies, and we're building a DVD and Blu-ray collection to share with everybody.
We really miss independent video stores. They were awesome. You could roam endless aisles of titles, find something great to watch and even have in-person conversations with real-life, cinema-loving human beings who live in your city.
These days, most of us “rent" movies through streaming services. It feels like convenient access to tons of movies, but in reality… it’s a mess. Titles come and go, or can even disappear forever after one shareholder meeting. And costs keep rising. You can buy a movie digitally, but then lose access to it if you cancel the wrong subscription, or a new CEO decides to change the terms of service or axe titles from their catalog.
So we’re opening The Video Store MPLS — where you can rent physical copies of excellent movies from a local, nonprofit operation driven by pure cinema obsession.
Right now we're getting set up behind the scenes and pretty soon we'll be fundraising. Then we plan to open up a volunteer-run, brick-and-mortar neighborhood video rental place.
And we need your help to get there.
“A wise quote about film that we’ll post once we aren’t so busy setting everything up.”
